Upon getting his PhD in 1993, Mike S. Adams was both an atheist and a Democrat. Later that year, he was hired by UNC-Wilmington as a professor in the criminology program. A few years later, Adams abandoned his atheism and also became a Republican. He also nearly abandoned teaching when he took a one-year leave of absence to study law at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1998. After returning to teach at UNC-Wilmington, Adams won the Faculty Member of the Year Award (issued by the Office of the Dean of Students) for the second time in April of 2000.
After his involvement in a well-publicized free speech controversy in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks, Adams became a vocal critic of the diversity movement in academia. After making appearances on shows like Hannity & Colmes, The O’Reilly Factor, and Scarborough Country, Adams was asked to write a column for Townhall.com in 2003. He soon became a national leader in the campus free speech movement.
Dr. Adams specializes in turning local abuses of the First Amendment into national news stories. His columns are emailed overnight to 200,000 readers on Town Hall’s Opinion Alert. The next day they received up to 100,000 hits on Town Hall before they were reprinted on websites like Front Page and Human Events. His columns have also appeared in print publications such as the Washington Times.
Radio talk shows have also started reading Mike Adams’ columns on the air. Examples include Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Neal Boortz (a show on which Dr. Adams regularly appears). On one occasion, a reading by Sean Hannity resulted in 20,000 emails to a Student Government Association engaging in religious viewpoint discrimination.
Dr. Adams also works for the Young America’s Foundation as a campus political speaker. His appearances have ranged geographically all the way from Oregon to New Hampshire. Some of Adams’ speeches – such as an address to the Yale Law School College Republicans – have been aired on C-SPAN.
Today Adams enjoys the privilege of expressing himself both as a teacher and as a writer. In his spare time, he loves making fun of feminists with his anti-feminist wife, Krysten. Dr. Adams is also an avid hunter and reader of classic literature. In 2004, he published his first book, Welcome to the Ivory Tower of Babel. In 2006, he published Feminists Say the Darndest Things.
